According to UN data, about 8 million refugees have fled from Ukraine following a year of fighting
The U.N. refugee agency reported that over 8 million Ukrainian refugees have been recorded across Europe since Russia invaded nearly a year ago.
Poland has received the largest number of Ukrainian refugees, estimated at around 1.5 million, followed by other European countries such as the Czech Republic and Slovakia, due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Save the Children, which has been operating in Poland since February 2022, has identified child protection, education, and emergency assistance through cash vouchers as some of the longer-term needs that require financial support.
According to Celina Kretkowska-Adamowicz, director of program operations for Save the Children in Poland, some refugees have attempted to return to Ukraine, but found they were not able to live in peace and then returned to Poland.
Out of over 17,000 displaced individuals surveyed by the U.N. from October 2022 to February, 24% said they have returned home at least once since leaving, citing visiting relatives and obtaining documents as some of the top reasons.
